            The megaliths of Punkri Burwadih

The General Manager of Punkri Burwadih Coal Mining Project of NTPC ,Sh. U.Rao on the Vernal Equinox morning of 20 March promised me and to the Press people present to observe the spectacular sunrise through the megaliths, that NTPC will preserve the Megaliths of Punkree Burwadih much to my and to the relief of the megaliths lovers of the nation.
All waits to be seen how these people translate their words into deeds.

THE VERNAL EQUINOX ‘Mela’ OF 2010

From very early morning people had been gathering here. A whole team of NTPC Punkri Bur Coal Mining Project was here. The sun rose through the megaliths from behind the hill at around 5.58 AM. There was an uproar and deep sighs every where. I was at the job of the compering the phenomenon to the people present. The honourable G.M and his wife were seen worshipping the menhirs. The presence of the Head of the Depts. of Anthropology, Professors of Physics, Geography and even Commerce along with many other scholars, tourists and the common people made it a quite a colourful gathering. The event is slowly turning out to be a mela; Equinox Mela to be more precise. The villagers were seen selling photographs of the sunrise through the megaliths along with sweets and ‘gutkas’. A ‘chaiwala’ too was spotted selling tea. Boy what a ‘mela’ this is turning out to be !

glad to see that NTPC is finally developing the areas around megalith to save them. It is interesting to note that the GOI as well as state govt. have done absolutely nothing to preserve them in the last 50 years, and NTPC has take such a step with a noble motivation within a couple years of settling its base in Hazaribag. I hope this will help local people realize the fact that NTPC is here for the development of the region as a whole and not just making money out of coal mines. Its high time people changed their mindset and welcomed NTPC to this region.
Shriman Texens seems to be much influenced by NTPC. Let me tell you that even NTPC wasnt interested in the preservation of the megaliths had it not been for Mr. Subhashis Das.

Megaliths are his discovery and he has been fighting to save the PB megs too. It is his perseverence that the PB megaliths are world famous today and it is his effort that the megaliths are being saved and NOT for NTPC. NTPC has merely agreed to his plea.

NTPC has honoured Das not for his scholarliness of which they perhaps know nothing nor are they interested but to get popularity from it all.
It now depends how NTPC keep their promise.

Good to learn shri Subhashis Das that you are finally honoured by ironically by NTPC,people whom you had been fighting to have your megaliths of Pankri Barwadih protected.

You may not know me but my family and I happened to be in Jharkhand form Delhi and we were present in the equinoxes couple of years ago. My brother had visited the solstice in Stonehenge so I knew. But to have something like this in India in some remote megaliths surely you deserve to receive all the praises.

We saw the way you compered the event and you explained the phenomenon was really amazing. Congratualtions.

it is sad the beautiful woods of the area will be mined by NTPC in the name of development. A huge ecoloigcial disater in times of auch global warming.
