Excavated megaliths near Lummawbuh village in Meghalaya dated to 12 cent BC

Marcho Mitri an archaeologist and a team of academicians from the North Eastern Hills University excavated an archaeological site near Lummawbuh village in the northern slopes of Sohpetbneng hill in Meghalaya.

Mitri reports that they found megalithic structures in the ridge. They had the excavated grains, tools and other implements dated at the Miami based laboratory of Beta Analytic. The test result suggested that they were of 12 cent BC.

Mitri states that the megalithic burial site is spread at an area of 1.5 kms over the ridge. The prehistoric megaliths and the tools according to Mitri suggest that they are of Khasi in origin.The megaliths were first discovered in 2004 but studies took more than a decade to suggest that the site was in inhabited till about 200 years ago.

Each passing day numerous ancient megaliths get destroyed in India and we have no record of this disaster. It is sad that no government agencies like the ASI, the State Archaeological Depts and the District Administrations demonstrate any interest in their protection perhaps for their tribal origin and also possibly because megaliths to them do not appear to be significant relics of our land.

In actuality prehistoric megaliths are a significant source of our ancient history and their preservation is imperative as these monuments are evidences that India was indeed a land of the tribals in hoary times. A few of them however suggests that astronomy and geometry was known to the megalithic tribals millennias prior to the emergence of the Brahmanical astronomer/mathematicians. Obliteration of prehistoric megaliths is bound to erase this verity.
